Mom and I have always gone on adventures. When I was in Girl Scouts she couldn’t make it to the pre-planned “Mom and Me Weekend”. So we made our own. We picked a summer weekend. Vail was a short drive from Boulder and the Bolshoi Ballet was performing there at an outdoor pavilion. Mom and I had gone to the Nutcracker at Christmas time for as many year as I could remember so seeing the famous Russian ballet troop perform was a dream I didn’t even know I had come true.
I don't remember the name of our hotel. I do remember it was cute and looked like a Swiss Chalet (complete with whitewashed walls, brown wood accents and flower boxes spilling over with red geraniums.)
I don’t remember if it was the prima ballerina or the students on tour. I do remember the white tutus and the white chocolate “golf balls” that I had bought at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on our way to the ballet. (Mom said I could pick one thing, so I picked one box of 3 white chocolate golf balls…) I held the dimpled butter ball in my fingers and it slowly melted as I stared at the incredible dancers doing pieces of different famous dances. We had a marvelous time.
And so, the tradition was born. Mom and Me Weekends have been expanded to become mom and me adventures. My dad’s stroke in 2004 changed how our family traveled. Mom and dad used to go on physically challenging adventures and that was no longer possible for my dad who lost much of the use of his left arm and his left leg. He can now walk with a cane very slowly and gets around great on a scooter. But neither of those are enough to scale a mountain or hike a rugged path. Leave it to Mom and Me adventures to fill part of that adventure gap.
Tagged on our blog with #MomAndMeAdventure and #TravelTales are some of our stories - especially precious since we can't be together or travel right now. We have both written about the trips separately, without talking about what we were writing first to preserve our perspectives. So any #MomAndMeAdventure will have both Elaine's and Lindsay's stories with some overlap and many differences. We hope you enjoy.
